Remote access (optional, with Tailscale)

Remote access lets you control a monitor connected to your PC while you are away from home, including on your phone’s mobile data. The PC must remain on. MoyMote does not include Tailscale: you install and manage it separately.

Set up step by step

1. Install Tailscale on the Windows PC that runs MoyMote from Tailscale’s official site. Sign in to your Tailscale account and turn its connection on.
2. Install the Tailscale app on your phone. Sign in to the same account and turn its VPN connection on. Both devices must be in the same tailnet.
3. Open the MoyMote panel (on the PC choose “Open in browser” from the tray menu, or use a phone already paired on your home Wi-Fi). Tap “Modes & contrast”, expand “Advanced settings” and, under “Remote access (optional, with Tailscale)”, turn on “Listen on the Tailscale IP address”. This setting is off by default.
4. On the PC, choose “Show QR code” from the MoyMote tray menu. When the Tailscale IP is ready, scan the Tailscale QR code with your phone. Use a fresh code: each pairing ticket expires after about two minutes and works once. Keep the phone’s browser data to retain its device key.
5. Turn off Wi-Fi on the phone to test over mobile data. Keep Tailscale active on both devices. Open MoyMote on the phone and try a harmless brightness change. To turn remote access off, clear the switch in MoyMote settings.

Benefits

• Tailscale carries traffic in an end-to-end encrypted WireGuard tunnel.
• No router port forwarding or modem configuration is needed.
• You can connect from any network where Tailscale works, including mobile data.

Tradeoffs and security

• A separate app and Tailscale account are required. Tailscale must stay on at both ends, and remote control may have more delay.
• Other devices and shared users in your tailnet can reach the MoyMote server. Limit the tailnet to your own devices and revoke unwanted paired phones in MoyMote.
• Tailscale’s own terms, privacy policy and plan are your responsibility. MoyMote has no partnership with or endorsement from Tailscale.
• MoyMote still uses plain HTTP on your local network. The Tailscale tunnel encrypts the remote leg; use only trusted local networks for direct LAN access.

Troubleshooting

• Check that the PC is powered on and Tailscale says connected on both devices; verify both are in the same tailnet.
• If the Tailscale QR is missing, wait for a Tailscale IP on the PC, then reopen “Show QR code”. Scan the Tailscale code, not the LAN code.
• If pairing says expired, generate a fresh QR. If the phone lost access, check browser data and paired devices, then pair again.
• If the page times out, check Windows’ Private network firewall rules for MoyMote and your Tailscale connection. Do not open a public router port.
